Four Razorbacks Shine at Jamaican National Championships
Recently held in Kingston, Jamaica, the Jamaican National Championships saw a remarkable display of talent from current and former University of Arkansas track and field athletes. As the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo loom ahead, these athletes are gearing up for competitive glory.
Nickisha Pryce's Dominance Continues
Leading the charge was Nickisha Pryce, a former Razorback who claimed her third consecutive Jamaican title in the women's 400 meters. She sprinted to victory with a season-best time of 49.97 seconds, further solidifying her status as the nation's record-holder in this event, with a remarkable previous best of 48.57 seconds achieved at the 2024 London Diamond League.
A Strong Showing from Razorbacks
The competition featured other standout performances, including Shafiqua Maloney, who won the 800 meters in 1:59.81, marking her dominance despite being a representative of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Although she did not win the Jamaican title, her performance was a highlight of the event.
Tyrice Taylor made waves in the men's 800 meters with an impressive upset victory after surging from fourth to first place in the final moments. Taylor finished with a time of 1:45.26, just shy of the qualifying mark for Tokyo, but expressed satisfaction with his return after competing in Jamaica for the first time in two years.
Field Event Success Stories
In the field events, Romaine Beckford showcased his skills by winning the men's high jump at a height of 7 feet, 4 1/2 inches, while Carey McLeod triumphed in the long jump with a leap of 26-9 1/4. Their performances highlight the depth of talent at the University of Arkansas.

As the countdown to the World Championships continues, athletes must finalize their positions on national teams, with countries required to submit their rosters by September 1. The USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, set to take place from July 31 to August 3 in Eugene, Oregon, will also play a crucial role in determining qualifications for American athletes.
